The Algorithm of Loss (2026): After a failed blind date, Kazuyo is inspired to upgrade the AI programme of her late partner, Adam. But his sensory limitations force Kaz to confront the reality of grief, memory, loneliness and mortality.

The film is due to be premiere in festivals from 2026.

As AI is becoming more integrated into our lives, we finally begin to ask ourselves if we are using it for the right reasons. Though it started with holograms and high-profile celebrities. We are now seeing loved ones recreated in AI form for all sorts of contentious reasons. This film tackles the emotional effect of technological accessibility. Are grief and loss things to side-step and control? Or are they fundamental parts of the human experience?

“It’s important for films to begin to look at how the human experience is changing with the scarily wide range of technological tools that are easily accessible now. How do we process deeply existential emotions like grief when it’s possible to have effortless access to late family members? How about depression when AI therapists agree with everything you say? THE ALGORITHM OF LOSS sets up these ideas and I wanted to make a film which realises them in a patient and grounded way, that focused more on the emotional effects of these breakthroughs than the gimmicky glorification of them. Aesthetically, the film feels like a homage to both classic and contemporary east-Asian cinema, combining the visual styles from films like IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE and EAT, DRINK, MAN, WOMAN with notes of contemporary romantic sci-fi like HER.” — Levi
